Google Launches The Google Toolbar

Free Software Download Enables Access to Google’s Award-Winning Search Technology From Any Web Page

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – December 11, 2000 – Google Inc., developer of the award-winning Google search engine, today announced the immediate availability of the Google Toolbar(TM). This free browser plug-in enables Internet users to search for information with Google’s fast, highly relevant search technology, from any web page on the Internet.

Available now from toolbar.google.com, the Google Toolbar is a powerful information search and retrieval companion that seamlessly integrates with a user’s web browser. The Google Toolbar enables users to search for information on websites without their own search capability, and can quickly highlight and jump to search terms on any web page.

"The Google Toolbar provides fast access to Google’s best search tools from any web page on the Internet," said Larry Page, Google CEO and co-founder. "Additionally, the powerful feature set enables users to save time while searching for information."

Google Toolbar features include:

  • Search the pages of any website on the Internet, even if the site does not have its own search engine;
  • Automatically locate search terms on any web page, in place of using the web browser’s ‘find’ feature;
  • Locate search terms on any web page with each word highlighted in its own color;
  • Directly access Google’s cached version of web pages in the event that a link is broken or has been taken offline;
  • Search for related web pages;
  • Automatically determine web page importance for every page browsed, with Google’s award-winning PageRank(TM) technology;
  • Search over 1.3 billion web pages from any website on the Internet.

The Google Toolbar is available free of charge for users of Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT, and version 5.0 or higher of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
